- According to legal documents, Los Angeles County officials showed photos of Kobe Bryant’s helicopter crash.
- Vanessa Bryant’s attorney has called two individuals who described the incidents to testify.
- The county says Bryant’s lawsuit is invalid and that the witnesses did not see the photos.
According to legal documents filed in federal court, graphic images of Kobe and Gianna Bryant were shown in bars and at awards ceremonies after their deaths in the helicopter crash.
Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, sued the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the fire department, the county and eight police officers over the photos, claiming invasion of privacy and negligence.

She sued in September 2020 after reports that officials took and shared photos of human remains after the crash in January 2020. Nine people died in the crash, including Coby and 13-year-old Gianna.
A statement filed by Bryant attorney Louis Lee said “close-up photos of Gianna and Kobe’s remains were shared with at least 28 sheriff’s department units and at least a dozen firefighters and shown in bars and at a gala. ”
“It also showed that the (county) defendants engaged in a cover-up, destroying direct forensic evidence of their misconduct and requiring extensive circumstantial evidence to establish the full extent of that misconduct,” Lee said.
In the documents, Bryant’s attorneys also offered a list of witnesses for the trial, which is scheduled to take place within 15 days in February.
The list includes two individuals, Ralph Mendez Jr. and Luella Weyreter, who he said filed separate complaints describing the crash photos on public display.
Bryant’s documents say Weyreter attended the 2020 Golden Mike Awards less than a month after the crash.
There, she said, she saw former Los Angeles County Fire Chief Tony Imbrenda talking about the photos and showing them to others.
Mendes said Joey Cruz, a former deputy trainee with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, showed him and bartender Victor Gutierrez the photos at his bar two days after the accident, according to the lawsuit.
The county defended itself by saying the photos were not posted online or published except for the incident at the bar, the lawsuit said.
Officials also said the photos were quickly deleted and that neither Mendes nor Weyreter saw them.
“They either ‘overheard’ something from 20 feet away or someone told them what someone else told them. That is not proper evidence,” the response said.
Last month, a federal judge denied the county’s request to dismiss Bryant’s lawsuit, the LA Times reported.
