Police have arrested a 19-year-old man suspected of shooting several people in Memphis during an alleged Facebook Live broadcast.

Ezekiel Kelly, a suspect in the shooting, was taken into custody Wednesday night by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department in neighboring Mississippi after 9 p.m. local time, Fox affiliate WHBQ-TV reported.

Kelly’s arrest ended a crisis that has gridlocked Tennessee’s second largest city as a result of a police chase that spanned the tri-state area. Details are still emerging about the number of victims and the motives behind the alleged series of shootings that rocked the city.

The alleged series of shootings began around 4:30 p.m., police told WMC Action News 5. A video allegedly posted by Kelly shows the suspect entering an AutoZone store, where he points a gun at a man inside and pulls the trigger.

Memphis police responded to reports of the shooting with an alert urging residents to take cover.

“WARNING!!! WARNING AND DANGER!!!” said Memphis police in their first Twitter post, urging residents to call 911 if they have information on the shooter’s whereabouts.

“If you don’t need to go outside, please stay home!” – the city of Memphis said in a Twitter post.

Police have not given details of those injured and killed in the shooting, but Fox affiliate WHBQ-TV says the suspect claimed in a Facebook Live video that he shot five people.

There were at least three shootings, including the death of a man on Lyndale Avenue, the death of another man at a gas station on East Parkway, and the serious injury of a woman on Norris Road soon after, according to the TV station.

The shooting shut down the University of Memphis after shots were fired nearby, WHBQ-TV reported. The Memphis Transit Authority also tweeted that it was suspending trolley and bus service “indefinitely.”

Memphis Police Major Karen Rudolph told WATN, an ABC affiliate, live on Wednesday night that authorities had few details about the shooter, including a motive, but that the shooting occurred at five locations across the city.

“The suspect is still at large,” police tweeted at 8 p.m. local time. “If you don’t need to go out, stay home until clarification is made.”

Police chased the suspect across the state border into Arkansas after 7 p.m. local time, where he allegedly stole another man’s car before heading back to Memphis, according to a KAIT news station in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Kelly was still at large shortly before 9 p.m. local time and was last seen in a gray Toyota with Arkansas license plates, according to police. Kelly was previously seen driving a blue or silver sedan with a red license plate and a broken rear window, before switching to a gray Toyota SUV, police said on Twitter.

Kelly got the Toyota after stealing the woman’s car on Poplar Avenue, police told WREG. Witnesses told the station that the woman was injured.

Kelly later crossed into Southhaven, Mississippi, where he stole a Dodge Challenger before confronting police at the intersection of Ivan Road and Hodge Road, refusing to get out of the car while it was surrounded by law enforcement, the station said.

Police issued a temporary shelter order for anyone in the area of Ivan Road and Hodge Road shortly after 9 p.m., and announced that it was lifted about 20 minutes later.

The motives for the alleged shooting are unclear. WHBQ-TV discovered Kelly’s previous Facebook posts mentioning the shooting.

Kelly was previously arrested for attempted first-degree murder and reckless endangerment in 2020, the Commercial Appeal reported. He was released from prison in March after being sentenced to three years, according to the newspaper.

According to the newspaper, police issued a warrant for Kelly’s arrest Wednesday night for first-degree murder.

Newsweek has reached out to Memphis police for comment.
