Speculation about the house arrest of Chinese President Xi Jinping has taken over social media. Rumors are circulating on social media that Xi has been removed as head of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) and that the Chinese capital Beijing is now under the control of the army.

As Business Today reported Monday (26/9/2022), this comes one day after a former high-ranking security official was sentenced to life in prison by a Chinese court. He is believed to be part of a “political clique” opposed to Xi.

Two other people associated with the group were given suspended death sentences, and three others received long prison terms this week.

Meanwhile, there are other rumors circulating on the Internet that Li Qiaoming, China’s PLA commander, has succeeded Xi Jinping as China’s ruler.

However, there is no official confirmation of these rumors from the Chinese Communist Party or state media.

Chinese human rights activist Jennifer Zeng, who now lives in the US, shared a video on Twitter and claimed that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was advancing toward Beijing.

Zeng’s tweet read: “The #PLA military vehicles are heading toward #Peking on Sept. 22. The entire 80-km long procession begins in Huanglai County near Beijing and ends in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping is rumored to have been detained after top CPC officials dismissed him as head of the PLA.”

Lots of rumors on Twitter.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is said to have been detained by the People’s Liberation Army. However, the source of the video, as well as the time and place where it was filmed, is unclear.

Indian politician Subramanian Swamy also spread this rumor on Twitter to his 10 million followers. He mispronounced Xi Jinping’s name as Jingping.

“We need to check the latest rumor – is Xi Jinping under house arrest in Beijing?” – Swami said.

According to the version circulated by Swami, Chinese Communist Party leaders stripped President Xi Jinping of his military mandate while he was on a visit to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after which a house arrest was made.

However, this news was denied by former U.S. defense official Drew Thompson. He admitted that the political conditions in China are not easy. Speculation and rumors spread easily.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York City, MSN News quoted him as saying Saturday (24/9).

The diplomats shook hands and exchanged pleasantries before sitting down with aides on the sidelines of the summit without answering questions from reporters.

They last met in July in Bali, Indonesia, where Blinken pressed China on its position on Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Before meeting with Wang, Blinken also met with his counterparts from Australia, Japan and India, leaders of the so-called “Quartet,” which in recent years has held more direct talks on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region.
