A Brandeis University student died late Saturday and 26 other students were injured after the bus they were riding in crashed into a tree in Waltham, Massachusetts, west of Boston, officials said.
Authorities did not immediately report the condition of the victims, but said the students’ injuries were of “varying degrees of severity.” The bus driver was also injured.
The bus was carrying students from a hockey game at nearby Northeastern University, Marian T. Ryan, the Middlesex District Attorney, said in a statement. Northeastern is about 13 miles from Brandeis.

No charges have been filed, and the cause of the crash, which occurred around 10:45 p.m., is being investigated by her office and the Waltham Police Department.
Waltham police identified the deceased student as Vanessa Mark, 25, an undergraduate student, Julie Jett, a university spokeswoman, said Sunday.
“Given the tragedy our community is experiencing, Brandeis has canceled classes scheduled for Monday and Tuesday,” the university said in a statement. “This will allow some students to return to their families and friends earlier than the normal vacation schedule would allow. For those students who remain on campus, we will have additional opportunities to gather and get support.”
According to the university, the bus was owned by Joseph’s Transportation, based in Medford, Mass. The company has a fleet of 30 vehicles, according to federal records.
The company did not immediately respond to phone calls and emails Sunday.
