Martial arts legend and actor Bruce Lee needs no introduction. After winning the hearts of fans with his martial arts and acting skills, Lee’s death at age 32 came as a shock to his fans. Now, nearly five decades after his untimely death, a new study has revealed that the actor passed away due to excessive water consumption.

According to a new study published by Sky News, the cause of Bruce Lee’s death at age 32 in Hong Kong in July 1973 may have been the consumption of excessive amounts of water.

The autopsy report revealed that the actor died of cerebral edema (swelling of the brain), which until now was thought to be a reaction to a painkiller he had taken.

Several theories have been proposed over the years about Lee’s death. However, the research team has now suggested that Lee’s brain edema may have been caused by hyponatremia.

Researchers explain the cause of Bruce Lee’s death.

The researchers explained the cause of Bruce Lee’s death in their journal Clinical kidney and wrote, “In other words, we suggest that the inability of the kidneys to excrete excess water killed Bruce Lee.” The team added that several factors indicate that the late actor consumed a lot of water in his daily life. These factors include a diet based on fluid intake, which his wife Linda discussed, and a reference to his biographer Matthew Polley drinking water repeatedly throughout the day.

The researchers write: “We suggest that the fact that water intake was repeatedly observed when it was such a routine activity that one might have forgotten about given the exceptional circumstances means that it was indeed markedly higher than the water intake of others present on the day of Lee’s death.”

The excessive water intake may have caused a particular form of kidney dysfunction in the late actor’s body, which meant that his kidneys were unable to excrete enough water to maintain water homeostasis. Lee had apparently also consumed cannabis, which made him thirsty.

Concluding their hypothesis, the researchers wrote: “This could lead to hyponatremia, cerebral edema, and death within hours if excessive water consumption is not accompanied by excretion with urine, which is consistent with the timing of Lee’s death.” The fact that we are 60% water does not protect us from the potentially deadly consequences of drinking water faster than our kidneys can excrete excess water.” They also recalled the late martial arts legend’s famous line “Be water, my friend” and added, “But excess water seems to have ultimately killed him.”
